JOHN MURRAY MITCHELL

John Murray Mitchell (1815-1904) was a Scottish Missionary who ministered in Mumbai, India and parts of Maharashtra. He was born in Scotland on 19th August. He studied in Marischal College in 1829, graduated with an MA in 1833 and then studied Church ministry in Edinburgh.
Mitchell was ordained by the church of Scotland in July 1838 and was sent to Mumbai. He soon mastered Marathi and Sanskrit languages and started ministering in and around Mumbai. In 1844, he moved to Nagpur to establish a new mission, frequently travelled to interact with local people there and ministered for ten years. Later from 1854 to 1857, he was based in Pune, where he acted as a relief for a missionary colleague, James Mitchell. In 1867, he took charge of Duff College in Calcutta at a time where the mission was experiencing difficulties. There he founded a mission to work among Santal people. He also had a significant role in establishing Shimla Union Church which opened in 1870. Mitchell wrote many books in Marathi for the local people. He also translated works from Marathi into English.
Mitchell died in Scotland at the age 𝘰𝘧 89 and was buried there in 1904.
