సర్ డా. విలియం జేమ్స్ వాన్ లెస్ (1865-1933) కెనడా దేశము నుండి ఇండియాకు వచ్చిన మెడికల్ మిషనరీ, నేర్పరి అయిన వైద్యుడు, సర్జన్, హాస్పిటల్ నిర్వహణ కూడా బాగా తెలిసినవాడు, మానవతావాది. ఈయన 1894లో భారతదేశంలోని మహారాష్ట్ర, మిరాజ్‌లో మెడికల్ మిషన్‌ను స్థాపించి, 40 సంవత్సరాలు దానికి నాయకత్వం వహించాడు. ఈ మిషన్‌లో భాగంగా, డాక్టర్. వాన్ లెస్ 1897లో మహారాష్ట్రలో మొట్టమొదటి మిషనరీ మెడికల్ స్కూల్‌ను స్థాపించారు, లెప్రసీ శానిటోరియం, క్షయవ్యాధి ఆసుపత్రిని కూడా స్థాపించిరి. ఈయన సేవల ద్వారా ఎంతోమంది విడువబడిన దీర్ఘకాలిక రోగులకు చికిత్స చేసి, పునరావాసం కల్పిస్తూఉండేవారు.

Sir William James Wanless (1865–1933) was a Canadian-born surgeon, humanitarian, and Presbyterian missionary who founded a medical mission in Miraj, Maharashtra, India, in 1894 and led it for nearly 40 years. As part of this mission, Dr. Wanless founded Maharashtra’s first missionary medical school in 1897, and helped to establish a leprosy sanatorium as well as a tuberculosis hospital, now known as the Wanless Chest Hospital. Through his service, many long-term patients received treatment and rehabilitation.
